TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 760 islands out of 1,192 islands in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province have not been named until now.
The number of unnamed islands is bigger than the number of islands that have been named, which are 432 islands.
Therefore, the East Nusa Tenggara province continues to accelerate giving name to unnamed islands.
On Sunday (15/5), NTT Governor Frans Lebu Raya announced the names of ten islands in two regencies, Rote Ndao and Singa Edan regencies.
The naming of those islands was marked with the signing of an inscription in one of the islands, Usu island, in Rote Ndao regency.
"There are 10 islands given names by the Central Government and NTT regional government,” said Head of NTT Bureau of Public Relations Samuel Pakereng to Tempo.
Those ten islands are Nusa 2, Nusa 3, Nusa Boti, Pia Bilba, Huni Ama, Bolotelu Fola, Pia Fula, Namo Dere, Singa Edan, as well as Usu Island, which is inhabited by 103 people.
The nine other islands are uninhabited.
Samuel added that the governor hopes that those islands that have been named can be cultivated and managed for the prosperity of the people.
"Regencies that still have unnamed islands will have to immediately name those islands,” he added.
