TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-President Joko Widodo has invited the National Child Protection Agency (KPAI) to discuss violence against children, which has received a markedly increased media attention in the past few weeks. The Head of KPAI, Asrorun Ni'am Sholeh said that this discussion aims to formulate a response to fight the growing incidence of violence against children.
"President Joko Widodo has invited KPAI and several Coordinating Ministers and Ministers, specifically to discuss the issue of child abuse," said Asrorun through a written statement received by Tempo in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.
Asrorun explained that there is an urgent need to protect Indonesian children from violence and abuse. "This initiative and realization should be appreciated, and every element of the society needs to realize the urgent need to protect our children from violence," said Asrorun.
According to KPAI, sexual violence against children should be categorized as an extraordinary crime - which requires a specific and radical approach to prevent and mitigate. "We cannot logically solve this issue with our existing regulations - there needs to be a paradigmatic change, and it needs to be realized as soon as possible," said Asrorun.
It has been reported that the President have invited several cabinet ministers to take part in the discussion - namely the Minister for Religious Affairs, the Minister for Culture and Education, the Minister for Communication and Informations, the Minister for Women Empowerment and Child Protection, the Social Minister, the Health Minister, the Attorney General, and the Chief of the National Police.
