TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Foreign Ministry and Indonesian representatives in Saudi Arabia is taking steps following recent mass layoff carried out by the Saudi Binladin Group (SBG), an Arabian construction conglomerate, against thousands of Indonesian workers.
"Around 3,300 out of 6,000 Indonesians in Saudi Arabia are working as SBG employees," said Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, Director of Indonesian Protection of the Foreign Ministry in a written statement on Thursday, May 5, 2016.
Iqbal said that the Ministry will take steps to handle the layoff. However, Iqbal did not provide detailed information related to the steps.
Iqbal said that currently, many human rights activists and organizations are their hand to help Indonesian workers in Saudi Arabia. Iqbal added that he had received reports stating that some of the laid off workers have received their salary.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi had also ordered Indonesian representatives in Saudi Arabia to provide logistics for the workers.
