TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of gas-filling stations in Bekasi, West Java, confirmed that there was a significant rise in the sales of the subsidized fuel, locally known as Premium, during the long holiday this week.
“The Premium fuel has been sold out because many vehicle owners filled their tanks with Premium in full,” Gagah, 44, a gas-filling station officer in Pekayon, South Bekasi, on Thursday, May 5, 2016.
According to Gagah, fuel stations at Jalan Raya Pekayon-Pondok Gede had to direct their customers to buy non-subsidized fuels, namely Pertamax and Pertalite.
“We also suggested motorists to fill their tanks with Pertamax or Pertalite. Some of them were willing to, but others preferred to go to other fuel stations,” Gagah added.
According to Gagah, the Premium scarcity was not caused by late supplies, but due to huge number of vehicle owners consuming Premium for their vacation trips.
Maryana, 34, one of vehicle owners, said that he decided to fill the tanks with Premium in full since he was concerned that rest areas might be closed during the holiday season.
“During a heavy congestion, toll road officers usually close packed rest areas,” Maryana added.
