TEMPO.CO, Tahuna - Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan on Sunday, May 1, 2016 inaugurated 12 ports in North Sulawesi with a total investment value of Rp 583 billion (US$44 million).

Jonan said that the government would focus on expanding and developing hinterland areas after inaugurating 91 ports this year.

“The aim is developing land areas, such as warehouses, port lands, offloading equipment and others,” Jonan said on Sunday, May 1, 2016.

Jonan hopes that all ports would implement an efficient and reliable offloading system. According to Jonan, offloading activities at ports under Transportation Ministry’s control must utilize forklifts, reach stackers or cranes.

Umar Aris, acting director general of sea transportation at the Transportation Ministry, said that sea transportation infrastructures were necessary to realize improvements in the development dynamics, human, goods and services mobility, and to support developments in regions.

“As a regulator in the sea transportation sector, the Transportation Ministry serves a function to prepare sufficient infrastructures to support human mobility and smooth goods distributions,” Umar said during a speech.

Umar added that infrastructure developments were aimed at realizing an efficient and effective national logistics system.
