TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 1 million labors from all over Indonesia are expected to take to the street to commemorate the International Labor Day, or May Day, this coming Sunday (1/5).
“The number is the total of labors from 32 provinces in Indonesia,” said Chairman of the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI) Said Iqbal on Friday (29/4).
Iqbal added that there are four demands from the labors: the rise of minimum wage by Rp 650,000; the end of criminalization and layoff; the end of the Jakarta Bay reclamation, eviction and Tax Amnesty Bill, and the declaration of labor community organization.
In the meantime, 17,000 security officers will be deployed to secure May Day.
“To secure the day, we will deploy officers from the military, the police and the Jakarta Transportation Agency,” said Jakarta Police Deputy Dhief Brig. Gen. Nanang Jumantara on Friday
The officers will be placed at crucial points in the city including roads near the State Palace, National Monument (Monas), Bung Karno Sports Stadium and the House of Representatives, he said.
