Western Pacific Naval Symposium 2016 to Discuss Maritime Security

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe 15th Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS) is being held in Padang, West Sumatra, from April 13 to 14, 2016, to discuss maritime security, according to the Indonesia Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Ade Supandi.

"The WPNS 2016 is a forum of the naval chiefs of staff to discuss issues related to maritime security in each country and the policy of cooperation that had been established," Supandi remarked while opening the symposium on Wednesday.

He stated that the symposium was being attended by 27 WPNS member countries such as China, Singapore, the United States, Australia, France, India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Thailand, Japan, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Peru, New Zealand, and Canada.

The Indonesian Navy chief of staff affirmed that the WPNS was also being held to decide on the program of cooperation or exchange of officers.

"The program can be related to the exchange of officers, exchange visits, and education or training," Supandi noted.

He said the exchange of officers, exchange visits, and education or training fall under the program of partnership and cooperation among WPNS member countries in order to build trust and increase capacity in accordance with the developments in the current maritime security situation.
