TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Indonesia has launched an application called “WWF Seafood Advisor” that provides a guidance and information on safe sea products for seafood enthusiasts.
WWF Indonesia Coral Triangle Program director Wawan Ridwan said that the app was an effort to call on food enthusiasts to reduce the negative impacts of consuming seafood on marine resources and ecosystems.
“It is expected that seafood enthusiasts will be wiser in choosing sea products,” Wawan said on Tuesday, April 12, 2016.
Wawan added that Seafood Advisor was developed from the Seafood Guide mini catalogue released by the WWF Indonesia several years ago. By creating the app, Wawan hopes that the guide would provide consumers with information on nutritious seafood while preserving marine ecosystems.
A report entitled Living Bue Planet released by the WWF last year showed that the globally-consumed fish population had dropped by 50 percent since 1970. A more dramatic change was shown by the number of tuna and mackerel fishes populations, that dropped by 74 percent in a 35-year period.
Wawan added that the WWF Indonesia would update the information on fish resources in the app once in three years.
“We’re calling on the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry and fishermen to evaluate the marine products database,” Wawan said.
