Five Indonesian Designers Set to Go to London Fashion Week

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Five Indonesian Muslim-wear designers are set to show off their collections at the London Fashion Week (LFW). The young designers are flying to the prestigious event with the supports from the British Council and Muslim fashion e-commerce HijUp.com.

The five designers are Zaskia Sungkar, Dian Pelangi, Jenahara, Restu Anggraini and Vivi Zubedi. Vivi Zubedi will be representing Indonesia in the trunk show session while the other four will be displaying their designs at the International Fashion Showcase session where each of them will be bringing out the concept of four elements of the earth namely wind, fire, water and light.

Zaskia Sungkar, for example, applies wind element on Balinese songket and woven fabrics.

“Zaskia Sungkar’s DNA presents a simple, structural and monochrome look, and this kind of look is exactly what I will bring with me,” Zaskia Sungkar said at the press conference at the British Council.

Meanwhile, Dian Pelangi is collaborating with two British designers to present the fire element onto the runway.

“I made fire splatter patterns on shiny, dark fabric that looks like charcoal or ash,” Dian explained. Dian will also use Indonesian traditional fabric such as tenun, batik or jumputan.

Restu Anggraini who will present the water element uses eco-friendly linen material.

“Water is flexible, just like a woman who can adapt herself between a working woman and a wife. It is also firm which is in line with the DNA of Etu,” said Restu who owns fashion brand Etu.

The light element is presented by fashion designer Jenahara through white and blue collections with shimmering Swarovski sequins.

“Light gives energy and soul. I would like to store the energy and soul to my clothes,” Jena said.

The upcoming Muslim fashion show at the International Fashion Showcase becomes the first ever held in London Fashion Week. The event will roll starting from February 19 to 22.
