Franz Magnis: LGBT Community Must be Respected

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Father Franz Magnis Suseno said that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community is a part of society; therefore they should earn the same respect. "We must respect and do not discriminate them," said Fr. Magnis.

He said that sexual orientation is not contagious, and that it is a personal matter.

"Most people are drawn to the opposite sex, but some are attracted to the same sex," he said. "Obviously, it is different, but we must embrace the fact. We cannot discriminate someone out of his or her nature."

Franz also condemned people who forcefully dismissed LGBT discussions.

"I do not agree if such meeting is dismissed. That is childish," he said.

Nonetheless, Father Magnis refused the idea of legalizing gay marriage.

"Same sex marriage is not making any sense. Marriage is made to create generation; and we will not get it from same sex marriage, so people must protect family and holding official marriage ceremony" he said. "However, what they do on their own will is no one's concern but themselves."
