Earthquake Hits West Sumba; Dozens of Public Facilities Damaged

TEMPO.CO, Kupang - An earthquake measuring 6.6 in Richter scale rocked West Sumba regency, East Nusa Tenggara province on Friday (12/1), causing cracks in dozens of public facilities in the regency.
"Dozens of offices were reportedly damaged due to the tremor,” said Head of West Sumba Disaster Mitigation Agency Viktor Umbu to Tempo on Saturday (13/2).
Buildings affected by the quake, Viktor added, are among others the office of West Sumba District Heard, a regional hospital, a private hospital, headquarter of West Sumba resort police, and a number of schools.
“We’ve collected the data and we can confirm that a number of public facilities have been damaged,” he added.
Based on the report from the Kupang Geophysics, Climatology, and Meteorology Agency, the earthquake measuring 6.6 in Richter scale happened at 9.77 south latitude, 119.34 east longitude, located 14 kilometer to the southwest of West Sumatera at the depth of 10 kilometer.
