TEMPO.CO, Nusa Dua - Despite the plummeting oil price to US$30 per barrel, the government expressed its commitment to apply the 20-percent mandatory biodiesel mix (B20).
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said explained that as the first country implementing the B20 program, Indonesia had faced challenges in terms of technical and non-technical aspects. However, Sudirman said that he would continue to optimize the utilization of renewable energy sources.
“When we reach the sustainable point, it will be continued and consistent,” Sudirman said in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Friday, February 12, 2016.
Sudirman explained that a consistent implementation of the B20 program would reduce fuel import by 6.9 million kiloliters per year or US$2 billion in foreign exchange. In addition, the program would also support government’s effort to boost clean energy utilization. The B20 program was projected to reduce up to 18 million tons of CO2 per year.
The goal was in line with Indonesia’s commitments expressed at the COP21 climate talk in Paris, namely reducing the emission by 29 percent below average in 2030 and 41 percent by utilizing new and renewable energy sources up to 23 percent of the national energy consumption in 2025.
