TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sahat Sinurat, director of industrial relations dispute settlement at the Manpower Ministry, said the government will prepare training and people’s business credit (KUR) program for workers who were being laid-off; they will be encouraged to do entrepreneurship.
The aid is designed so the laid-off workers can establish micro, small or medium businesses (UMKM), Sahat said. “The government will launch training programs to transfer skills,” he said on Thursday, February 11, 2016.
In the meanwhile, the government is also still making efforts to prevent larger layoff and team of Manpower Ministry has checked companies that plan to improve efficiency.
Sahat pointed out Chevron’s measures before conducting efficiency by slashing the number of workers such as reducing the number of foreign workers and not extending the contract of several workers.
However, Chevron's moves were not optimal, so they offered their workers a voluntary resignation program. “Chevron will conduct 25 percent efficiency from around 1,700 of its workers,” said Sahat.
He hopes business players in Indonesia are willing to coordinate with local governments if they found obstacles in their business so the government might help to solve their problems.
With joint coordination, problems that cause companies to conduct efficiency can be prevented. “It means the government and businessmen solve business obstractions together,” said Sahat.
Based on the Manpower Ministry’s data, as per January 2016, there have been 208 layoff cases with 1,377 workers losing their job. The largest layoff is in Jakarta with 1,047 workers.
