TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Koran Tempo and Tempo magazine nabbed two awards, which was given to celebrate the 2016 National Press Day. One of the awards was given to Subkhan J Hakim, a Tempo lifestyle and features journalist, who won the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) Adinegoro Awards, for the infotainment category.

Meanwhile, Tempo's economy and business reporter, Praga Utama, won first prize in a travel writing competition for the maritime travel category, which was also conducted to celebrate the 2016 National Press Day. Both competition was organised by PWI along with the Ministry of Tourism - which is the first time such competition was organised by the journalists' organisation.

The award ceremony was conducted on February 9, 2016 - to coincide with the peak of celebrations to commemorate the day, which was held in Central Lombok's Kuta Beach, in West Nusa Tenggara. Present at the ceremony was President Joko Widodo, along with the editor-in-chiefs of scores of Indonesia's mass media organisation.

The Head of PWI's Central branch, Margiono, said in his opening speech that 2016's celebration is one of the most festive celebration organised by the organisation. "In addition to the presentation of the Adinegoro Awards, for the first time ever, we organised a competition for travel writing," he said, before adding that he hopes that more participants - especially journalists from rural areas - will join in the upcoming years. "We don't want the awards to be dominated by writers employed by established mass media based in the capital," Margiono said.

A member of the judging committee, Amalia E. Maulana, explained that Subkhan's writing was chosen as the winner of the competition for his ability to showcase modern approaches and style of writing in his work. "The writing is unlike what we've seen from other contestants, so we firmly believe that his work - titled 'Jagoan Lokal Tak Kalah Pede' - is worthy of the Adinegoro Award," Amalia said. Subkhan's work was published in Koran Tempo on July 26, 2015.

"Subkhan's writing successfully encapsulates and portrays existing trends among our youths - such as comical satire and the generation's obsession with social media," Amalia said, before adding that his crisp delivery was a breath of fresh air to its' readers - resulting in a higher reader retention than other works judged by the panels.

Meanwhile, another member of PWI's Central chapter, Rita Sri Hastuti, said that Praga's work - entitled 'Kepulauan Kei Maluku Tenggara: Miniatur Nusantara dari Tenggara Indonesia' - which was published by Tempo Magazine on November 22, 2015, was chosen as the Best of the Best for its' comprehensive style of writing. "His work captures the lifestyle of the region's coastal inhabitants - including its' unique culinary highlights, local customs, and its' tourism potential, which has yet to be fully explored," Rita said.

Other works were also chosen to receive the Adinegoro Award in other categories. The Best Photography Award was awarded to Abriansyah Liberto of Tribun Sumsel. The work, entitled 'Tinjau Titik Api' was published on September 6, 2014. Best Caricature was awarded to Didie Sri Widiyanto, whose caricature - 'Inikah Kartini-Kartini Kita Sekarang?' - was published by Kompas on April 22, 2014. Best Radio Journalism was awarded to Hermawan Arifianto of Kantor Berita Radio, which explored the dark history of the persecutions of witch doctors - or dukuns - in Indonesia.

Best Television Journalism category was won by Trans7, entitled 'Tantangan Menuju Rampi', which aired on February 23, 2015. Best In-depth reporting category was won by Kompas, which published its' report on the fate of Indonesian teachers, which published its' series of articles between November 23-26, 2015. While best cyber journalism writing was awarded to Andi Nurroni's work, entitled 'Salim Kancil, Buta Huruf yang Menjadi Martir Lingkungan', which was published by republika.co.id on September 30, 2015.
