TEMPO.CO, Depok-The Indonesia Child Protection Commission (KPAI) urged the government to take firm actions against child predators. KPAI secretary general Erlinda said heavy sanctions, such as castration and death sentence, must be imposed to give deterrent effect.
KPAI recorded that in 2013, the amount of violence and sexual abuse against children reached 566 cases. The number increased greatly to 1,267 cases in 2014 and after a notion of castration was issued, the number decreased sharply to 900 cases.
“The idea of castration that was proposed in October scared them [pedophiles] and caused the number of pedophile cases to drop,” said Erlinda when she was visiting the kidnapper of seven-year-old Jamaludin at Depok Police station on Sunday, February 8, 2016.
According to Erlinda, Indonesia is prone to crimes against children as there are many child predators. “There are exclusive pedophiles and other types of pedophiles.”
One example is there are indications of pedophilia case in the case of kidnapping and murder of elementary school children. Erlinda said there are similarities with the case of Jamaludin, who was kidnapped and murdered by Januar Aridin, on Sunday. “Children are lured. Perpetrators also seem to cover something up,” said Erlinda.
According to Erlinda, castration can prevent pedophiles from preying on children and death sentence can be imposed on those who kill children. “KPAI supports castration and death sentence.”
