TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Legu Gam Festival which is normally held on April in Ternate, North Maluku, will kick start sooner this year as a rare phenomena total solar eclipse is predicted to pass by the island on March 9. The new date for the festival is starting from March 1 to 14, Ternate Mayor Idrus Assagaf said on Tuesday.
This year’s festival will be filled with cultural event that shows values of local wisdom. Folk market to commemorate the birthday of the late Ternate sultan Mudhafar Sjah is also set to be held as part of the event.
Legu Gam festival, which is originally held to celebrate the Sultan’s birthday, is composed by one main event called Legu Gam dance. It is a Legu dance performance for the Sultan after he attended three important events namely Doru Gam, Kololi Kie and Fere Kie.
Doru Gam is Sultan’s visit to certain places in the region while Kololi Kie is a tradition where the Sultan go circling Mt Gamalama or Ternate Island through the sea. Fere Kie, on the other hand, is a tradition where the Sultan climb up Mount Gamalama.
