TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Communication and Information Ministry said that it would focus on developing local game industry.
"We’re going to pay more attention to local game industry because it has big potentials. This industry will bigger than film industry,” said Bambang Heru Tjahyono, Director General of Information Application of the Ministry in Jakarta on Saturday (23/1).
According to Bambang, Indonesia is the second biggest game application markets in South East Asia with the investment growth reaching 47 percent and Indonesia’s revenue currently reaching US$321 million.
"This is a big thing. However, players of local game industry only dominate 10 percent of the market share. Contribution of local developers is only 1.2 percent and we hope it can reach 50 percent," he added.
Bambang added that one of the obstacles that hinder the development of players of local game industry is the fact that there is no integrity between local developers and local publishers.
"Local publishers take games from other countries while local developers are hired by foreign developers to work for them,” he added.
Bambang predicted that the number of local game industry players would decline in 2019 if the government does not work with stakeholders of the game industry.
He also said that the Ministry is currently formulating a road map so that local developers can take over the acquisition of market in Indonesia.
"We’re going to finish the road map immediately so we can make this game industry a part of the contributors to the national economic growth,” he added.
