TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - PT Angkasa Pura II will apply an automatic baggage handling system (BHS) throughout the entire Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten in the near future.
Due to the implementation of the system, the porters’ service in the airport’s vicinity will not be needed.
“This will be a long-term effort to prevent the damaging of passengers’ luggage by porters which frequently occurs,” PT Angkasa Pura II Company Secretary Agus Haryadi said Monday, January 4.
The BHS to be applied in Soekarno-Hatta Airport will be similar to the ones applied in Kualanamu Airport, North Sumatra and an airport in Balikpapan, Kalimantan.
BHS is an automatic baggage handling technology with the highest level of security detector (Level 5). The technology allows passengers to check-in their luggage at counters without fearing it will be mixed with other flights.
“It will start at Terminal 3 Ultimate in mid-2016,” said Agus. Terminal 1 and 2 will immediately follow after a total revitalization.
The current BHS is still done manually. Luggage is pushed using a carriage, coming in or out of plane, and then picked up by porters. “This triggers luggage burglary,” Agus said.
He said BHS will prevent that. “We are confident that this could reduce burglary issues,” he said.
Senior General Manager PT Angkasa Pura II Zulfahmi said the revamping of baggage handling and security in Soekarno-Hatta Airport are done by tightening security with 24-hours CCTV cameras.
“We continue to coordinate with airlines and ground handling parties to always synchronize our vision in improving services at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. It is our duty to seek for solution when passengers facing problems in airport,” said Zulfahmi.
