TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rico Saputra (21) and Fajar Ramadhan (23), two university students from Bekasi, West Java, on Saturday (2/1) were killed after they were drowned in a strong current off the beach of Pulau Air in Seribu Islands, North Jakarta.
The accident happened at around 7 a.m. local time.
Chief of Kepulauan Seribu resort police Adj. Comr. Sr. John Weynart Hutagalung said that the two victims and their eight friends arrived in Pramuka island on Friday (1/1) to celebrate New Year.
Weynart added that based on the information from the witnesses, when Rico was playing on the beach, a strong current suddenly swept him away to the sea. Afterwards, seeing his friend swept away by the current, Fajar tried to rescue him.
"However, Fajar was also swept away because of the strong wind and the strong current. Both men were drowned," Weynart said on Saturday (2/1).
Weynart further said that bodies of the victims have been found and taken to Pulau Pramuka hospital for autopsy and the police have also questioned witnesses for further investigation.
