TEMPO.CO, Paris - Mangrove forest has been pushed to become part of blue carbon in climate change agenda. “Mangrove forests in Indonesia are wide and have several mangrove development centers,” said Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya in Paris on Wednesday, December 3.
During the 21st Conference of Parties in Paris, Siti Nurbaya signed the Blue Carbon Partnership project with Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt. Other parties participating in the project include IUCN, CIFOR and Conservation International.
Several regions are projected to become locations to develop mangrove forests in a form of village forest, such as Padang Tikar Island in Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan.
Other mangrove forest areas that have been examined by CIFOR and Forestry Research and Development will also be included, such as Sembilang, Cilacap, Kubu Raya, Tanjung Pinang, Bunaken, Bintuni, Timika and Bali.
According to Siti Nurbaya, Indonesia welcomes the cooperation as it is one of the climate change adaptation agenda. Blue Carbon is also a form of REDD activity to reduce greenhouse gas emission.
