TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - During the UN Climate Conference, COP21, in Paris, Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said that Indonesia would show its commitment to promoting new renewable energy and sustainable forest management.
According to Jokowi, Indonesia is heading toward a policy on the utilization of new renewable energy. “The target is to achieve 23 percent of new renewable energy utilization by 2025 and 100 percent of electrification in rural areas by 2019,” Jokowi said at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport on Wednesday, December 2.
The move reflects Indonesia’s concern towards human life, since about 1 billion people in the world are depending on forests and other 6 billion are indirectly depending on forests.
Together with 17 other countries, Indonesia expressed the commitment to forest conservation in a sustainable development.
Jokowi also called on other countries to contribute more to the environment conservation. “We expect developed countries to lead us in efforts to reduce emissions,” he said.
Earlier on November 30, Jokowi and First Lady Iriana Widodo attended the COP21 in Paris. The conference was also attended by 147 heads of state and world leaders who raised their views about climate change.
