TEMPO.CO, Pekalongan - The Local Government of Pekalongan, Central Java, is ready to register a number of cultural heritage buildings as world heritage and legacy to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
“Currently, we are preparing a number of cultural heritage buildings in the region to be enlisted at UNESCO as world heritage and legacy,” Head of Tourism and Cultural Department Pekalongan Doyo Budi Wibowo said in Pekalongan on Monday, December 1.
To create the proposal, the local government will be assisted through a workshop by the consultant from the Public Works and Housing Ministry.
“We are optimistic that it will be approved by UNESCO. Currently, one of the awards given by UNESCO to Pekalongan is on batik handicraft,” said Doyo.
The cultural heritage buildings proposed to UNESCO include areas in Jetayu, Pecinan (Chinatown), Kampung Arab, and Kampung Batik Kauman.
The local government shall fill out a form containing inventory and heritage lists owned by Pekalongan local government as the early step.
“Once it’s done, we will propose it to UNESCO,” said Doyo.
If it is approved, it could improve the people’s welfare through foreign tourist visits.
