TEMPO.CO, Semarang - The Central Java Commission for Protection of Gender and Child Violence Victims (KPK2BGA) stated that the number of cases of violence against women and child have been increasing every year.

"Central Java is in an emergency to save women and children from cases of violence," said Soka Handinah Katjasungkana, Chief of the Central Java KPK2BGA during an event on Tuesday, December 1, 2015.

Data revealed that in the first semester of 2015, around 565 individuals – mostly women - have fallen victim to violence. The number increases compared to the 561 victims recorded in the same period in 2014.

Meanwhile for child violence, data showed that the number of cases continue to increase in the past few years. In 2012, data recorded that there were 483 cases of child violence, 405 of which occurred to girls. In 2013, 491 girls become victims of violence out of the total 595 occurrences. Meanwhile, in 2014, out of the 799 cases that were recorded, 627 cases occurred to girls and the other 152 cases occurred to boys.

"The majority of child violence cases are sexual violence against girls," Handinah said.

The KPK2BGA explained that several factors that caused violence cases continue to occur include a patriarchal culture, lack of law enforcement, poverty, and improper use of social media. Another factor includes inadequate treatment for violence victims.
