72,000 People in West Java Having Severe Mental Illness: Study

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Approximately 72,000 people in West Java are having severe mental illness, according to a research done by the Health Ministry in 2013.
The research also shows that from that figure, 1,005 patients are still confined with wooden stocks. It also said that the long duration of healing process has made the disease cannot be cured optimally.
Teddy HIdayat, a psychiatrist at Hasan Sadikin hospital in Bandung said that the number of mental illness patient in West Java was calculated from 1.6 per mile multiplied by the total of population.
"With the population of almost 45 million, West Java has around 72,000 people having severe mental illness,” he said on Saturday (21/11).
Teddy also said that mental illness patients are evenly spread in almost all regencies and cities in the province.
