TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Teuku Taufiqulhadi, chairman of the National Democratic (NasDem) Faction at the House of Representatives Commission III overseeing legal affairs, on Friday, November 20, urged House speaker Setya Novanto to resign from his position.

Taufiqulhadi, along with Adian Napitulu from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Inas Nasrulah Zubir from the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura), and Arifin Hakim Toha from the National Awakening Party (PKB), held a press conference in relation to their plan of submitting no-confidence motion against Setya Novanto. The move will be set in motion next week.

According to Taufiqulhadi, Setya Novanto had violated numerous ethics codes when serving as the House Speaker. He also asked the House of Representatives Ethics Council (MKD) to impose a heavy sanction against Setya.

The NasDem Faction has planned to push three options to resolve Freeport contract renegotiation scandal. First, Setya will be asked to voluntarily resign from his position as the House Speaker. Second, the MKD must impose a heavy sanction against Setya that might also result in Setya’s removal.

“Third, we will establish an inquiry committee to investigate PT Freeport,” Taufiqulhadi said.

Earlier, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said reported a transcript of recorded conversation allegedly between Setya Novanto, Freeport Indonesia president director Maroef Sjamsoeddin, and oil and fuel kingpin Muhammad Reza Chalid. The MKD initially asked the National Police to validate the content of the transcript. However, National Police Chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti viewed that such a validation was unnecessary since Setya had confirmed his involvement in the conversation.
