Indonesian Diaspora Welcomes Push Towards Dual Citizenship  

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-The Board of Indonesian Diaspora Network Global (IDN) is very pleased with President Joko Widodo’s recent statement to push for dual citizenship during a recent state visit to the United States.

IDN President Ebed Litaay said in a statement on Thursday, October 29, that they are willing to facilitate the decision-making process in parliament.

President Joko Widodo promised to push the discussion on the Bill for Dual Citizenship for children who were born from parents with different citizenships, during a visit to Washington DC, United States (US). The promise was delivered in a dialogue with Indonesian diaspora at Washington's Tilden House on Sunday, October 25.

IDN will strongly urge their members particularly those in Europe, USA, Australia and Asia to take actions to initiate a dialogue with the government.

Earlier Foreign Affairs Minister, Retno LP Marsudi said that discussion on the topic has indeed progressed since it was first raised in August 2015, during a discussion among Indonesian diaspora in Jakarta.

According to Retno, the discussion is a form of support for Indonesian diaspora, because Indonesians abroad could potentially provide a boost of support for the development and progress of Indonesia as a country.
