TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As much as 18.5 hectares forest in Lore Lindu National Park (TNLL) area, Palu, Central Sulawesi, was caught in fire during the drought, Antaranews reported. Head of Technical Subdivision of TNLL, Ahmad Yani, said the fire are spread around several spots in Sigi and Poso Regency.
The main cause of the fire, Yani said, is the land-clearing performed by people burning the land around the park. Cigarette butts thrown away carelessly are also thought to be a contributing factor. The fire is then quickly spread around wider area and into the national park area with the wind.
“Those (are) what caused fire in the forest within the National Park Area,” said Yani as quoted by Antaranews.
Rain that fell in the past few days has been helpful to prevent the fire spread. Up to date, however, there are still hot spots existing in remote locations. TNLL with aids from the army and park rangers continue efforts to extinguish the fire.
