Gaikindo: LCGC Market Unaffected by Economic Slowdown

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The economic slowdown causes sales of cars to decrease. However, the sales of low cost green car (LCGC) remain unaffected.
“LCGC still stands on 15 percnt market share from total sales,” said Jongkie D. Sugiarto, the chairman of the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo), on Friday.
According to Jongkie, economic slowdown affects purchasing power. “If purchasing power drops, people will look for cheap cars.”
He said on January-October 2015, sales of cars decreased significantly compared to the same period last year. “This year, the sales decreased by 19 percent. Almost all middle segments experienced the same decline,” he said.
Jongkie continued that Gaikindo could not predict when the downward trend in sales would change. Automotive market share depends on national economic growth. If there is a pressure on the national economy, automotive market will also be affected. “We’re only going with the flow. I hope sales will be better next year.”
