TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama on Thursday, October 8, questioned the House of Representatives’ plan to revise Law No. 30/2002 on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
According to Ahok, the existing KPK law is sufficient and allows the anti-graft commission to handle corruption cases.
The House of Representatives earlier proposed the revision during a meeting with the Legislative Body on Tuesday, October 6. The House even aimed at including the KPK law draft revision in the national legislation program for 2015.
The plan to pass the bill draft has sparked controversies as Article 5 of the draft limits KPK’s work period for 12 years since its promulgation.
Ahok said that the article would be counterproductive to corruption eradication efforts. Ahok also compared the anti-graft commission in Hong Kong that was established before the KPK. Ahok said that the KPK was formed as a result of public distrust in the Police and attorney’s office.
