TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Starting out as a hobbyist, Luthfi Hasan is now raking up around Rp100 million turnover per month from remaking and selling re-made vintage furnitures. The owner of Jakarta Vintage creatively redesigns second-hand furnitures from tens of years ago into fresh, vintage-looking furnitures for modern consumers.
“I am a fan of old stuffs,” said Luthfi when met in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 2015.
In November 2012, Luthfi had his debut as curator and opened an online shop to sell furnitures. In January 2013, he started the ‘recycling’ business by offering service to fix old furnitures. He earnestly re-polish, fix and even redesign the shape of the furniture to make it into even more attractive furniture.
This business has led to the opening of Jakarta Vintage shop in Dharmawangsa Square, South Jakarta. The store is named after Luthfi’s blog about furnitures.
“Five years ago, people sold furnitures as they are, no creativity or inovation. When I combine the old furniture with other elements, it becomes fresh and unique therefore it can be sold at higher price,” Lthfi told Tempo at his store.
“Originality is our strength. We dare to play with variety of materials, motif or colors to make something attractive. Every design has its own twist.”
Luthfi releases four new collections each year for Jakarta Vintage and promote them through social media. Price for offered for Luthfi’s furniture is ranging from Rp2 million to Rp11 million for chairs, and Rp2.5 million to Rp4.5 million for tables.
The writer of ‘Happy Vintage’ believes that vintage stuffs would bring peace, happiness and preserve warm memories of the past for its owners.
