TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A forest measuring six hectares in Kagok Village, Kulon Progo District, Yogyakarta, was up in flames on Tuesday, Oct 6, and managed to be extinguished in the early hours of Wednesday, Oct 7.
Local residents and Kulon Progo SAR team tried to put out the fire since afternoon, but had just been extinguished on Wednesday early morning due to the lack of water in the region.
At least 300 joint personnel from the Regional Disaster Management Authority (BPBD) and local resident were deployed to the scene.
`Fire started to burst around 5pm, Tuesday and occurred at six points in Banjarsari District. Residents and SAR team have tried their best to put out the fire,` said Legowo, Kulon Progo SAR team, on Wednesday, Oct 7.
Residents attempted to extinguish the fire using makeshift tools, but the fire continued to spread due to the significant amount of dry leaves and its steep-hill area.
Sugiyono, a resident of Banjarsari, said residents have yet know the cause of the fire and that fire frequently occurs in the area.
