TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced that the number of domestic air passengers in Medan and Jakarta fell 1.2 percent in August to 6.3 million from July's 6.4 million.
"The decline occurred in Medan and Jakarta," BPS chief Suryamin said as reported by Antara Thursday, October 1.
According to Suryamin, the passengers decrease in Kualanamu airport reached 2.59 percent while Soekarno-Hatta recorded a 2.14- percent decline.
Despite the declines, Suryamin said that the overall air passenger volume in August was the second highest this year.
In contrast, there were increased numbers of passengers in Surabaya's Juanda Airport (14.92 percent) and Denpasar's Ngurah Rai (6.44 percent).
From January to August, the year-on-year number of domestic passengers increased by 17 percent to 45.1 million people, while international flyers increased up 2.12 percent to 9.2 million people.
Met at the Garuda Indonesia Travel Fair last week, Garuda Indonesia president director Arif Wibowo said the declined price of aviation fuel could be a profit potential for airlines amidst the economic slowdown. Moreover, Arif said, Garuda's passenger capacity this year has grown by 11 percent, allowing the airline to consume more fuel.
"If the jet fuel prices go down, we can offer cheaper rates," he said.
