TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of cases of cybercrimes in Jakarta increase, from 541 reported cases in 2013, 785 cases in 2014 to 690 cases in 2015, according to Jakarta Police spokesman Sen. Comr. Muhammad Iqbal.

According to Iqbal, the most reported cybercrime over the past three years is fraud through e-mails, text messages and websites, while the second is defamation through Internet.

Jakarta Police’s cyber crime sub-directorate chief Adj. Sen. Comr. Hariyanto said victims of this crime are the most because many victims are easily lured by prizes and low prices. “This what makes fraud cases through Internet are increasing,” he said.

Therefore, Hariyanto urged people to be more careful in uploading photos and information through Internet as they can be misused by people with bad intentions. “One example is selling babies,” he said. “The perpetrator took the pictures from social media.”

The most recent cybercrime is the break-in of bank customers’ accounts using phishing malware software. The police caught two suspects; Olexandr Sulima alias Oleks from Ukraine and Dmitry Gydskiy from Russia on September 5.
