Yogya Governor Inaugurates Parangtritis Geomaritime Science Park

TEMPO.CO, Bantul - Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X has inaugurated the establishment of Parangtritis Geomaritime Science Park on Friday, September 11. The Entity was born by collaboration between Geospatial Information Agency, Geography Faculty of Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Yogyakarta Regional Government and Bantul Regency.
The establishment of the science park will be run alongside revitalization of Prangtritis Geospatial Laboratory and restoration of threatened sand dune.
Based on Tempo observation, the sand dune in Parangtritis is severely damaged by the existences of trees, especially cemara udang (Casuarina equisetifolia), and illegal human settlements. In addition, tens of shrimp ponds are found around and inside the core restoration zone.
The Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education, Mohammad Nasir, who also attended the inauguration, hopes that Parangtritis Geomaritime Science Park will become the center for that provide information concerning geospatial to public.
“It can also provide information for fishermen about location of the water that holds abundant plankton and fish,” Mohammad Nasir said.
