TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pahawang Island in Lampung Bay has become new primadonna among tourists for its underwater beauty. People would usually sign up for a weekend trip to Pahawang, to snorkel or to enjoy the island’s white sand for one full day.
“Visitors come to Pahawanng, Lesser Pahawang, Kelagian and Tanjungputus islands are usually for diving and snorkeling,” said Jelly, a travel operator it the island.
Tourist can stay over night in Bandarlampung because it is not too far from the island. They can depart early in the morning and return in the evening. The route that usually taken from Bandarlampung to Pahawang is Bandarlampung-Lempasing-Mutun-Hanura-Pantai Ketapang-Pulau Kelagian dan Pulau Pahawang. It takes around less than one hour to reach Ketapang Pier from Bandarlampung downtown.
“The underwater view is wonderful here, the water is clear and the coral reefs are naturally well preserved. We can find beautiful fish and other sea creature in the coral.” Said Ratna from Bandarlampung who spent her weekend at the island with family.
Some snorkeling spots are full with jellyfish that can stick onto and cause itch on the skin. The jellyfish are mostly found around Kelagian Island. In addition, there are also wreck of sinking fishermen boats underwater.
A naturally-formed bridge called Tanjung Putus bridge connects Tanjung Putus Island with Lesser Pahawang. The natural bridge can only be seen when the sea water tide is low. This area is one of the favorite spot among tourists. Lesser Pahawang is ten-minute away from Larger Pahawang. It is recommended to stock up drinking water and snacks before leaving to Lesser Pahawang.
Boats are available for rent for around Rp500,000 per boat per day. Each boat can take in up to around 15 people. Snorkeling gears are also available for rent starting from Rp50,000to Rp75,000 per person.
An alternative to enjoy the trip in Pahawang is to ride boat along the coastline. There are coconut trees swaying along one side of the coast and thick jungle on the other side. The clear blue water is contrasting the green from the trees.
