TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Australian tourist was found dead after diving at Beribanua Bay Sipora Island, Mentawai District, West Sumatra, on Wednesday, September 2.
Mengawau Resort Police Chief Adj.Sr.Comm. Reko Indro Sasongo, confirmed the death. The tourist was identified as Adam Albert Dube, where he was found dead around 7 am Wednesday.
Reko said the victim and his friends came from Padang with Debora Tour Ship. Once arriving at Beribanua Bay, the ship anchored at sea. The victim drank plenty of alcoholic beverages.
While drunk, the victim took a dive in the sea along with his friends on the early hours of Wednesday. “However, the victim did not surface,” said Reko.
The victim’s friends along with the ship crews conducted a search. At around 7 am, the victim was discovered dead.
“After receiving the information, we directly went to the crime scene, which was difficult to reach,” Reko said. The body is currently being transported back to Padang.
Reko expect tour ships carrying tourists to Mentawai to report to the authorities in order to know their whereabouts. “We also urged that all tour ships to be on alert of the weather due to strong waves,” he said.
Previously, a man identified as Ronald Stephen Scneider, 54-year-old Australian-born surfer, was also killed when surfing at Katiet Village, South Sipora, Mentawai Island, West Sumatra, on Tuesday, August 25.
