TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Like the 140-character limit on Twitter, since the beginning Instagram only allow users to upload photos with a ratio of 1:1 or squares.
This can be their own unique and distinctive charm, or it could be a weakness, depending on the users. However, lately, more people started uploading non-squared photos on Instagram using another application to edit their photos.
It seems that most people do not like the aspect ratio restrictions on Instagram. The social networking focused on the photos and (later) videos finally decided to add support for landscape and portrait aspect ratio.
The Instagram update is present in the latest version 7.5 on iOS and Android. When selecting an image, the user is provided with a button to switch to the original image ratio, not the 1:1 ratio. After that, users can continue to edit photos as usual.
This also applies to video. There are no restrictions in landscape mode, but in portrait mode, if the user upload a ratio of 16:9 (vertical), it will be cropped to fit the 4:3 ratio.
Although presenting images of in landscapes and portraits, Instagram still presents a square thumbnails display for photos and video on the profile. This update shows that Instagram is willing to listen to users, as reported by GSM Arena.
