Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dr Marto Sugiono SpU, a urologist from Siloam Hospital, Kebon Jeruk, Jakarta said kidney stone can now be eliminated without surgery by using "Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy" (ESWL) technology.

“ESWL is a non-invasive treatment aimed to break kidney stone without surgery,” said Marto in Jakarta on Saturday August 29.

Using the method, kidney stone will be broken into small pieces that it will move through the urinary tract and out of the body more easily than a large stone. It is also a laser-less treatment.

“Medicines can’t break kidney stone if it sizes more than 5 mm,” Marto added.

Patient will be asked to lay down to determine the position of the stone. Then, the shock wave is focused on the kidney stone. After the procedure, the patient is recommended to drink lots of water to flush out the stone pieces. Siloam Hospital, according to Marto, provide the treatment at Rp8.5 million.

According to Marto, kidney is a frequently-found urinary tract disorder happened to people at productive age.

“This is because of the life style. Too busy in work that one may forget to drink,” Marto said.

Living or working in high temperature place and lack of calcium intake are also factors that cause kidney stone to form.
