TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Achmad Basarah, a member of House of Representatives Commission III overseeing legal affairs, said that terrorist groups targeted police personnel to join terrorist network.
“A number of police personnel have been involved in terror acts,” Achmad said in a dialogue covering counterterrorism topic at the Brawijaya University, Malang, on Thursday, August 27.
According to Achmad, terrorists have developed their intelligent capability to strengthen their network.
Brig. Gen. Hamidin, the director of prevention at the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) said that the early detection program and counterterrorism efforts must involve all elements, including police, regional governments and universities.
Hamidin added that terrorist networks had managed to access advanced technologies, including chemical, biology, radiology and nuclear weapons. Terrorists also had access to information related to weapon utilization from the Internet.
“Now, Police personnel have become their target,” Hamidin said.
Hamidin revealed that counterterrorism approaches must be reformed from militaristic ones, which often create new terrorist groups, to legal approaches that include deradicalization efforts.
