TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cyber crimes committed by hackers in Indonesia have caused Rp 33.29 billion of losses as of August 2015.

"In the course of three years, there have been 36.6 million attacks on internet networks. The total loss since then has reached Rp33.29 billion," Police Comm. Gen. Agung Setya, deputy director of special economic crime at the Indonesian Police Criminal Investigation Unit, said on Tuesday, August 25, 2015.

"The Data Security Threat 2013 also mentioned that Indonesia is still classified as vulnerable to hackers' attack," Setya said.

From 2012 to April 2015, the Indonesian Police's IT/Cyber Crime division had arrested 497 people suspected of cyberspace crime. As many as 389 of them are foreign nationals while the remaining 108 are Indonesians.

"Cybercrime rate continues to increase along with the growing number of internet users and the increasing speed of internet connection in Indonesia," he said.

Setya also said that the police are keeping an eye on the latest type of IT crime, which is the hacking of luxury cars. This type of crime has been on the rise along with the increasing availability of so-called smart cars that use the internet-based synchronization technology such as Wi-Fi, bluetooth, UConnect, and others.

Last year in London, there were 6,000 cases of car thefts done by hacking the keyless-entry system.
