Finance Ministry Mulls Changing Term `Wajib Pajak` into Tax Payer

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Finance has proposed the change of the Indonesian term ‘wajib pajak’ (literally means: those obliged to pay taxes) into ‘pembayar pajak’ (literally means ‘tax payer')” in the draft of the amendment of the law on the general provisions and procedures of taxes (KUP).

According to Finance Minster Bambang Brodjongeoro, the term ‘wajib pajak’, which has long been used, gives the impression that the people are only obliged to pay taxes without enjoying the best services.

"Maybe the term ‘wajib pajak’ has been used ever since before the democracy era of this country. We have to think about it although it is only a term,” the Minister said in Surabaya on Thursday (20/8).

Bambang went on to say that the change of the term would be included in the deliberation of the amendment of the law at the House of Representatives (DPR) this year.

He further said that with the new term, it is expected tax payers can get the best services and can take an action against the state if there are misuse of taxes or if they do not get the best services.
