TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Flight Navigation Director Ministry of Transportation Novi Riyanto said the only airport closed up to this day is Notohadinegoro airport in Jember, following the eruption of Mount Raung. “The eruption at Sunday night was not that big,” Novi said Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Since July 4, 2015, the Transportation Ministry routinely opens and closes airports in East Java and Bali due to increasing activities of Mount Raung by issuing notice-to-airman (notam), said Novi.
“We continue to give updates to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency,” she said.
The activities of Mount Raung had declined within the last three days last week. Based on the seismic and visual observation report by Tempo, lava bursted from its crater.
Strombolian burst occurred in form of lava on Sunday evening reaching 100 meters in height. The activity status of Mount Raung remains in alert level.
According to Novi, airlines should continue to monitor informations both from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard MitigationMeteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency and the Transportation Ministry that issues a notam.
