TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An explosion has been reported at Puri Pattene housing complex's C Block in the District of Biringkanaya, Makassar, on August 3, 2015. Local authorities have confirmed that two people have died in the incident, which occurred on 3.30pm, local time.
Two people were killed in the blast, while several others are currently being treated for a variety of injuries," said Biringkaya's Police Chief, Comr. Azis Yunus, on Monday.
Local police officials are currently investigating the cause of the massive explosion, and explanations range from an exploding gas tank to an improvised explosive device (IEDs). "We are still looking into the matter," said Azis.
The Head of Public Relations for South and West Sulawesi, Sr. Comr. Frans Barung Mangera, has confirmed that a blast had been reported in the housing complex - although he stopped short of confirming the exact number of casualties claimed by the blast.
Some reports have cited three as the total number of casualties - one if which is 55-year old H. Lolo, an unemployed local resident.
Barung said that his team of officials will continue in investigating the explosion - which is known to have happened without any warning. Some people suspect that it is bomb used for fishing - due to the lingering smell of gunpowder in the area of the blast.
Six homes are known to have been damaged by the explosion.
