TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Google introduces a visual and offline translation service using smartphone camera in a video conference meeting with a number of media at Google Indonesia office on Thursday, July 30. After activating Google Translate application, users simply have to point their phone camera to the words to be translated.
Octavio Good, the developer of the application, said in the session that this is possible thanks to Google’s algorithm and augmented realty tech. The complex tech recognizes text recorded by the camera before the algorithm translates the text into selected language.
Julie Catteau, Google Translate Product Manager said that around 90 languages have been facilitated to use with the feature. Users can have an option to choose offline and online translation.
Still according to Julie, online translation will have to yield more accurate translation when there are large numbers or words to be translated.
