TEMPO.CO, Padang - A 4.7-magnitude quake rocks Mentawai Islands Regency, West Sumatra, on Sunday, August 2, 2015, at 1:35pm local time. The quake was also felt by people in Padang and Painan, but there were no report of damage.
Padang Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the source of quake is located 56 kilometers northeast of Mentawai Islands.
“It was 24 kilometers deep,” said Information and Data Section Head of Padang BMKG, Panjang Buha on Sunday.
According to Chairman of Indonesia Geologists Association, Ade Edward, the quake hit between Sipora Mentawai and Padang, in the Siberut Seismic Gap Megathrust precisely.
“The Siberut Megathrust Segment is currently a lock zone. It is known by the seismic term ‘gap zone’ , zone that keeps potential of high magnitude quake,” said Ade.
