Geothermal Power Plant Construction Starts in West Java

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) developed a geothermal power plant (PLTP) in Kamojang, near Bandung, West Java, with a capacity of 3 megawatts, BPPT’s director of conversion and conservation technology center Oktaufik said on Wednesday, July 29, 2015. 

The geothermal power plant was built to supply electricity for the manufacturing industry and its supporting components. Oktaufik said that the funds allocated for the power plant construction was taken from the State Budget. However, he shortstopped to reveal the exact amount since the power plant operation was still in a trial period. 

“We will reveal the number after the power plant starts its production,” Oktaufik added.

According to Oktaufik, the power plant development serves as an initial project for the geothermal industry in the future. The trial period is expected to last for three years. 

Oktaufik explained that data collected from the trial would be submitted to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, as well as the Industry Ministry, in a bid to craft program related to energy substitution.
