TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief Justice M. Prasetyo said that it will be difficult to meet Philippine’s request on releasing death-row convict Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso. “Mary Jane was proven guilty smuggling narcotics to Indonesia,” he said on Wednesday, July 29.
Prasetyo said that Mary Jane’s death row will likely remain, amid verdict from the Philippine court that put her as a trafficking victim under Maria Kristina Sergio. “It is not easy for her to get away from capital punishment in Indonesia," said Prasetyo.
Prasetyo said that Mary Jane can indeed file appeal and put recent verdict as the new novum. Nevertheless, that will have very little impact to the already-imposed verdict.
Mary Jane, supposedly executed earlier this year, was alleged of smuggling 2.6 kilograms of heroine to Yogyakarta. If she manages to prove that she is a mere victim of human trafficking, she might have a chance to dodge the bullet this time.
