TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- Some 165 illegal buildings in Menteng Pulo, South Jakarta, which have been around for around 30 years, were demolished on Tuesday, July 28, 2015.
Mahludin, Head of the Tebet Sub-district said that the buildings were demolished because it stands above a drain. "The land belongs to the government," Mahludin said. Mahludin added that in addition to blocking a drain, the buildings were taking up road spaces.
Mahludin said that the government will not provide compensation for the building owners. "Since mid-June, we have warned them to vacate the premises. They requested a delay until after Eid al-Fitr," Mahludin said.
