TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Secretary of the Indonesian Independent Teachers` Federation (FGII), Iwan Hermawan, suggested that senior students do not have the right to punish freshmen during orientation season. "Sanctions are imposed by teachers. Students have no authority," he said on Sunday July 26.
Iwan said that teachers must be involved in the orientation committee. “It cannot be entirely left out to student organization (OSIS)," he said. "It can lead to violence. FGII has asked schools to eradicate cruel orientation.”
Previously, orientation was often marked with various violent stints. Freshmen were asked to walk within hundred meters from school. They also often received corporal punishment.
Therefore, FGII warns that schools and senior students should not apply violent measures during orientation. Reports on cruel orientation can result in penal charges, in accordance to Child Protection Law No. 35/2014.
