DPR Calls for Mineral Law Revision

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In a bid to ensure Freeport's contract extension, Commission VII of the House of Representatives urged the government to revise the law on mineral and coal.
"It doesn't have to be a government regulation in lieu of law [Perppu]. The government could revise the law on mineral and coal," Satya Widya Yudha, the deputy head of the Commission VII at the House of Representatives said on Monday, July 6, 2015.
Satya said that Freeport would not be able to export minerals unless the company built smelters. Freeport also failed to meet the deadline to build smelters that was set in 2014.
The Commission, Satya said, expected the government not to accept Freeport's arguments regarding the failed attempt. Therefore, Satya added, the government must revise the law to avoid such a violation.
Freeport's contract will expire in 2021, and could be extended later in 2019 according to Government Regulation No. 77/2014. However, the US-based mining company had requested the current contract to be extended.
